Last (Officially Released) PS2 Game

Post by Masquarr »

IGN has a feed for releases of PS2 games in the USA. Throughout late 2010, games were coming out at an average rate of roughly one game per month. However, the most recent game to come out was WWE All Stars, released on March 29, 2011. The "Coming Soon" section currently does not list any upcoming PS2 games.

However, I saw that the wikipedia article for Madden NFL 12 lists Playstation 2 as one of the platforms it will be released on. Additionally, Favrenation found a listing for the game at Amazon. Considering the slow rate at which PS2 games have been coming out, and how far into the future Madden NFL is scheduled to be released, (August 30, 2011,) it's unlikely that any more games will come out afterwards. Besides, the last game to come out for the Gamecube was a Madden game, Madden NFL 08, as was the last game to come out for the Xbox, Madden NFL 09.

What are your predictions on what will be the last officially released PS2 game?

I think at this point no one would be too surprised or dissapointed if the playstation 2 stopped releasing new games. It sounds like a reasonable prediction to say that madden 2012 will be the last ps2 game. In my opinon, I dont' think the playstation 2 needs any more games added to its massive library. All it has been getting recently is water-downed ports anyways.

Lol, conicidentally enough I just ran into a similar topic to this on digitpress.com's forums. Someone found a listing for FIFA Soccer 12 being released in September.

So that might be the last game actually.

If the best we can hope for at this point are yearly sports "updates" and sloppy ports of licensed games, then it's time to call it quits. These games aren't bringing any long-term value to the library, merely giving retailers an excuse to continue stocking PS2 games and hardware.

The last game of any real worth was Sakura Wars in 2010 (hard to believe it's been a year already!), which was touted as the PS2's swan song. Everything else past that point is worth marginal value at best.

I with there would be a hardcore indie activity on the ps2 like the dreamcast but pressing the games would be costly and harder to do than just burning quality discs for retail. I wouldn't be surprised if there is at least one more good game coming out though.

legitimate retailers don't sell burned games :P
It would be cool if something new came out though. They were coming out with new ps2 revisions right up until the end.. seems like kind of a waste.

EDIT: oh. just realized what you were saying. independent publishers. maybe

and they are not just burned games wither they have legitmate artwork on the dics in legit cases it just they probably just burned disc instead of using press (which you cant do on the ps2 unless its modded).

I agree about it becoming like the Dreamcast. I think coders and developers that want to be known may start developing games for ps2 then releasing them on the internet for people to download and burn on a disc. Sure it is illegal but some awesome games could be developed. As for retail, I think the ps2's run is over. It would be so awesome if a ps2 developers website came out and people developed games and released them for the public. It would be even awesomer if those people added an online mode to those games without DNAS and hosted them from there own servers.

But there are still retail games for the dreamcast that are still being sold. A new one has come out every year since 1999.
