Yeah they still sell them. They are mostly space shumps but they are legit retail games. Not on GD-rom of course but cd. It comes with nice artwork and case usually.

I don't think they'll actually be able to "sell" ps2 games thoough, for legal reasons. because unlike the Dreamcast, the PS2s hardware hasn't been orphaned. But people still might develop new games for it just cause it would be really cool to evolve ps2 stuff without sony deciding what's popular and what isn't, instead of just letting it die and moving on. Maybe somebody will make Rez 2 :D
...And hopefully people will make a dvd-reader for it that doesn't burnout, haha

Mod-chips sold too :P there were a bunch of raids all over the US to take away stuff like that around 2006 from the people marketing them. But the whole scene never goes away it just learns and grows

What i meant though was that there are already very mature dev kits for the ps2 which you need permission to use. So of course if game development started up people would use those instead of starting from scratch, which would be like developing a new ps2 all over again

Swap magic was developed using an open source devkit that isn't really meant for crazy graphics and movies. just like ulaunchelf etc

The thing is though Sony Doesn't Care anymore though. And there is an open source dev tool just couldn't find the link atm. PS2dev site is down but not the forums lol.

edit: here too http://psp.jim.sh/svn/

You're right they probably don't. too worried about all the ps3 stuff going on now. But if it was good enough and they decided it was a threat to them, they might care. But if it wasn't being "sold" then they wouldn't be able to stop it so easily

Exactly. We can do whatever we want to our ps2s and they wont care. That is why nobody has done anything to the guys that host ps2 servers. Sony hasnt done anything to modchip owners or gameshark owners either.

Owning a chip is legal, even selling one is legal as long as whatever software installed on it is gimped in a way that prevents it from booting burned games. Otherwise if the software is non-upgradable the re-sellers will ship you the chip with something else (otherwise worthless), like an internal antenna amplifier sticker for a cellphone. That way it's not obvious which one you payed for(even tho it is), if it was imported from oversea.
course you could just buy all the necessary pieces and make your own chip.
And gamesharks are legal as well, they use to sell those at video game stores just like code breakers and action replays. I don't like cheating though, cause it makes the whole experience feel worthless ;) (except in vice city)

As far as owners, they will never come after them no matter what they do. There's just too many of them. It's distributors they wanna bust

There was a game compiled with the open source kit for the ps2 called super mario war. multiplayer. I don't know what happened to it though.
