The Haber-Bosch process, which synthesizes ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen, has played a vital role in feeding the global population by enabling the mass production of fertilizers. However, this process consumes about 2% of the world’s energy and largely relies on fossil fuels for hydrogen, raising concerns about its long-term sustainability.
Inspired by natural ammonia production methods, such as lightning-driven nitrogen fixation, a team led by the University at Buffalo has developed a groundbreaking plasma-electrochemical reactor that produces ammonia without a carbon footprint. Published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the study details a system that generates ammonia from nitrogen in the air and water at room temperature, with a production rate of approximately 1 gram per day for over 1,000 hours.

The reactor is seen as a significant step toward a more sustainable and industrially competitive method of ammonia synthesis, offering a cleaner alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. "Our process requires only air and water and can be powered by renewable electricity," said Chris Li, Ph.D., the study's corresponding author.
The team’s reactor mimics the natural process of nitrogen fixation, where lightning splits nitrogen molecules, which are then converted into ammonia by bacteria in the soil. In the UB-led team’s reactor, plasma replaces lightning, and a copper-palladium catalyst takes the place of bacteria. The plasma converts humidified air into nitrogen oxide fragments, which the catalyst then transforms into ammonia.
A key challenge in this process is managing the various nitrogen oxide intermediates created during plasma activation. The researchers used a graph theory algorithm to map the different reaction pathways and identify the critical intermediates. This allowed them to optimize the catalyst to selectively convert these intermediates into ammonia.
“Our approach makes it possible to efficiently convert multiple nitrogen oxide compounds into ammonia, a process that’s both difficult and energy-intensive in traditional methods,” said Xiaoli Ge, the study’s first author. This work represents a major advance in the quest for sustainable ammonia production.
