An international team of astronomers has discovered a new pulsar, designated PSR J1631–4722, which is associated with the supernova remnant SNR G336.7+0.5. The discovery was detailed in a research paper published on Dec. 16 on the arXiv pre-print server.
Pulsars are rotating neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, emitting beams of electromagnetic radiation. While they are primarily detected via radio emissions, some are also observed in optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths.
Pulsars linked to known supernova remnants (SNRs) are relatively rare, with only a few dozen such associations discovered to date. These associations are of significant interest to astronomers as they provide insights into pulsar formation and supernova explosion mechanisms.

The new pulsar-SNR association was identified by a team led by Adeel Ahmad from Western Sydney University. Using the Murriyang 64-meter CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope, the researchers detected the pulsar PSR J1631–4722 within the SNR G336.7+0.5.
In their study, the team reported the discovery of a highly scattered, young pulsar with a spin period of 118 milliseconds and a dispersion measure of 873 pc/cm3. Its rotation measure was found to be around -1,004 rad/m2, classifying it as one of the few known highly scattered pulsars.
Further analysis showed that PSR J1631–4722 has a characteristic age of 33,800 years and a spin-down luminosity of 1.3 undecillion erg/s. Its surface magnetic field strength was measured at approximately 2.6 TG. The pulsar's distance was estimated to be about 22,800 light-years, while the supernova remnant lies between 22,100 and 29,700 light-years away. Observations suggest that the pulsar is moving away from the site of the supernova explosion.
The study also revealed that PSR J1631–4722 exhibits linear polarization with weak circular polarization, with the highest degree of linear polarization observed at 3.8 GHz. The high linear polarization is characteristic of energetic, young pulsars.
