39001's are also the newest ones to have i.Link ports for older PS2 LAN games, like UT99, Time Crisis, GT3, and others.
50001s have better lasers too then the original 30000 models, and also avoid the 10000 models if you import, I heard some PS2 games have issues with those. Some game stores even reject the early 30000 models, as they break so often.

10000, 15000, and 18000 don't have issues with games but they aren't compatible with a lot of homebrew.
And yeah any 30000 that's still reading discs is surprising.

Also, I know Star Ocean had issues with the 1xxxx series. According to Wikipedia, this impacted sales of that.

The 1xxxx's are also distinct, with the grille not going all the way, and it having a PCMCIA port on the back and not using a newer HDD adapter.
