Players step into the role of Dina, who is on a quest to collect all the cards in the Critter Trading Card Game. Gameplay involves building a deck by opening card packs and trading with other players, similar to other trading card simulators. The combat system in Critter TCG mirrors that of the Pokémon TCG, where players need to build up energy using weaker skill cards to unleash more powerful moves, each with its own elemental affinity.
Isle of Swaps also takes inspiration from roguelike deck-building games like Slay the Spire. Players can choose from multiple characters, each offering unique abilities that add variety to the gameplay experience. This design encourages experimentation with different strategies during each run, offering a high level of replayability without locking players into a single themed deck.
The integration of roguelike deck-building elements makes Isle of Swaps a natural fit for a game inspired by the Pokémon TCG.
